The picture sits on a company’s server, or on a peer-to-peer network like IPFS. The token holds a link to it. If that goes away, the token points at nothing.

The Onchaininator reads your token and says where its picture actually lives. On the chains it runs on, it can write that picture onto the chain itself, where nothing has to stay online for it to survive.

Unread
The check has not yet established where this NFT’s files are stored.
Hosted
The artwork is served by a website. Its operator can change the file or take it offline.
Hashed
A hash, or digital fingerprint, identifies the expected file. It is stored outside this blockchain and still needs someone to keep it available.
Part onchain
Some of the NFT’s files are stored on its blockchain. Other files still rely on outside storage.
Fully onchain
All of the files identified by the check are stored on the NFT’s blockchain. The original image link and the way a viewer loads the artwork are shown separately.

The rings: whether the picture travels with the token when it sells

Not wrapped
The original sits in its collection, so nothing travels with the token.
Wrapped
The wrapper holds the original, so it travels with the token.
Frozen
The original can never leave the wrapper. It still trades.
Hollow
The owner took the original back out, so the wrapper is empty.
Compromised
The original left the wrapper by some other means.
Not read
Nobody has asked this chain whether this token is inside a wrapper.
Unknown
We could not get a reliable answer from this chain, so we cannot say whether the original is inside a wrapper.

How it works

  1. Look up an NFT

    Paste a contract address, or search for a collection by name. It does not have to be yours.

  2. Save the artwork onchain

    Onchaininator retrieves the available files and saves a copy on the NFT’s blockchain, along with a record of where they came from.

  3. Keep the original NFT

    The preservation record connects the saved artwork to its collection and token number. Your original NFT stays in its wallet and keeps its existing image link.

  4. Choose whether to wrap

    The NFT’s owner can optionally place it in a contract and receive a wrapper token that uses the saved artwork. You do not need to wrap an NFT to preserve it.

  • Keep your original NFT

    Saving the artwork leaves the original NFT in its wallet. You choose whether to take the optional wrapping step afterward.

  • Artwork stored onchain

    The saved copy becomes part of the blockchain’s data. Keeping that copy does not depend on the original website or a file hosting subscription.

  • Help preserve a collection

    You can preserve an NFT’s available artwork even if you do not own the NFT. Collectors and fans can help keep a collection accessible.
